Work with Classifications and Characteristics

This topic describes how to work with classification and characteristic values. While recording a transaction that involves classification or characteristic maintenance using Process Runner (SHDB, LSMW or any other recording technology), the screen progression is changed based on these values..

To configure classification

  1. While recording a SAP GUI transaction, in the work center window, select Classification. The Class Type window is displayed.
  2. To view the Change Work Center: Classification window, enter the class type.
  3. To view the Batch Input: Characteristic Value Assignment window, select Values.
  4. If you enter a value that you would normally enter in the Characteristic Value Assignment field for SAP GUI , an error message is displayed. As this is a special SAP recorder batch input screen for mass maintenance of characteristic values and which works for value assignment interdependent of your SAP logon language, enter the internal characteristic ID and value ID to maintain characteristics.
  5. To find out the required value, select the information icon i . The left column is for Characteristic and right column is for Value ID. You can maintain multiple characteristics and values in this screen.

Alternatively, perform the following steps:

  • You can record a transaction by disabling Batch Input mode during recording. If you do so, recording screens is similar to SAP screen. However, if you have complex screen and if you need to perform scrolling or page up or page down, these steps may not be recorded or played back correctly in Transaction (TX) technology or in SHDB, LSMW, SM35 or any other recording technology.
  • You can use Process Runner GUI Scripting (GS) or BAPI (BA) technology to maintain characteristics as well. BAPI solution has performance advantages while GUI Scripting technology could allow you to maintain characteristics in normal mode; however, recording via GUI Scripting could be challenging for a complex screen with lot of input data variation.

Note:

  • Process Runner can handle Classification and Characteristics creation and maintenance and supports the automation and mass updates in the same way as designed and used by internal SAP technology, such as LSMW, SHDB, SM35.
  • We recommend that you record using Transaction (TX) technology as described in this topic. If you have very large number of records to be maintained or your data format is complex, consider Process Runner BAPI (BA) technology.
